Several leading representatives of parties in the Bundestag on defense issues have expressed support for providing Ukraine with long-range Taurus missiles for strikes on targets in Russian territory—a position that the federal government had previously deemed unacceptable.
This information is reported in an article by the Rheinische Post.
In support of providing Ukraine with Taurus missiles, the spokesperson for defense issues from the Greens, Sara Nanni, and an expert in foreign policy from the opposition Christian Democratic Union, former Bundeswehr Colonel Roderich Kiesewetter, have previously spoken out.
Both emphasize that Ukraine should have the right to use these long-range missiles to destroy Russian installations launching missiles towards its territory.
"The most effective defense against Russian air strikes is to fire on targets in Russian territory and on the occupied territories in eastern Ukraine, from where Russia launches its attacks," said Nanni, adding that this is the best protection for Ukrainian civilians and is provided for by international law.
Kiesewetter believes that German cruise missiles will be indispensable for such strikes.
"Taurus is important because this system is very effective and can be used to destroy supply and command structures far beyond the front line," he said.
The CDU politician acknowledged that with the help of long-range weapons, Ukraine could destroy the Crimean Bridge, preventing the supply of Russian troops through Crimea, eliminate the Black Sea Fleet, and force Russian forces to surrender, thus liberating the peninsula.
