The military counterintelligence unit of the Security Service of Ukraine prevented the escape of a Russian agent who was preparing a series of terrorist attacks in the Dnipropetrovsk region.

The suspect was detained at the central railway station in Kyiv, where he was attempting to first flee to the European Union and then reach Russia.

The individual turned out to be a 63-year-old former police officer from Donetsk, who had been recruited by the FSB and moved to Dnipropetrovsk region before the full-scale invasion began.

Following instructions from Russian intelligence, he prepared four hidden caches containing combat grenades, detonators, and other improvised explosive device (IED) components in the cities of Pavlohrad and Shakhtarsk.

The FSB planned to pass the coordinates of these caches to potential perpetrators of terrorist attacks.

According to case materials, the traitor set up the stashes near abandoned buildings and local cemeteries. In addition to IEDs, he also left SIM cards and phones disguised in juice cartons for covert communications.

SSU military counterintelligence documented each act of subversive activity and apprehended the agent during the final stage of a special operation. A Russian passport issued to him in 2024 was seized during his arrest.

SSU investigators have charged him under two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:

  • Part 2, Article 111: High treason committed under martial law;
  • Part 1, Article 263: Illegal handling of weapons, ammunition, or explosives.

The suspect is currently in custody. He faces a possible life sentence with confiscation of property.
