Lithuania plans to build six underground schools-bomb shelters in six regions of Ukraine, said the head of the Lithuanian program for the reconstruction of Ukraine, Co-create Future of Ukraine, Artūras Žarnovskis, in an interview with Ukrinform.
The schools will be built "from scratch," meaning in places where there were previously no shelters. Additionally, the facilities will include anti-radiation protection. One school will be constructed in each of the Mykolaiv, Odessa, Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, and Chernihiv regions, while the location for the sixth school is still being sought. It is likely to be in the Kharkiv region, according to the foundation.
"Our goal is for children to be able to return to the educational process with direct communication with each other and with teachers. And under different conditions, such bomb shelter premises can be used for various purposes: for sports, cultural activities," Žarnovskis explains.
They aim to complete the construction of the underground schools by the end of 2024.
