The Polish prosecution is investigating over 70 companies suspected of fraud involving Ukrainian grain. These companies allegedly imported thousands of tons of grain into Poland, concealing its origin and intended use.
This was reported by Rzeczpospolita.
The Rzeszów Prosecutor's Office reported that the criminal investigation into the fraud involving Ukrainian grain in Poland covers 75 companies. Seventeen individuals have already been charged.
"The companies under investigation are registered in Poland. Among them, there are no Ukrainian companies. The suspects in the investigation are mostly Polish citizens, but there are also Ukrainian citizens and one Estonian citizen," said Dorota Sokolowska-Mach, a spokeswoman for the prosecutor's office.
According to the investigation, these companies imported thousands of tons of grain into Poland, concealing its origin and intended use.
Technical grain can be used for ethanol production or as a biocomponent for biofuel, but immediately after import, it was sold for flour production.
According to the publication, it became known that among those who bought such grain were well-known Polish flour producers.
Rzeczpospolita writes that the abolition of EU tariffs on agricultural imports from Ukraine in 2022 led to uncontrolled imports of cheap grain and rapeseed into Poland. Intermediaries bought the goods directly at the border and sold them in Poland as Polish.
This has caused protests among farmers. They believe that Ukrainian grain has driven down domestic prices in Poland, forcing local producers to operate at a loss.
