Spain, following the United Kingdom and the Czech Republic, has cancelled visa-free airport transit for Russian citizens, according to the country’s Foreign Ministry website.
Russian passengers will now need a transit visa to transfer at Spanish airports, even if they do not leave the international transit zone.
“This measure will take effect on July 12, 2025. Therefore, from this date, all holders of ordinary Russian passports wishing to transit through Spanish airports must have a valid visa,” the Foreign Ministry stated.
According to the ministry, the layover must not exceed 24 hours. A transit visa will not be required if the passenger holds a valid Schengen visa. The United Kingdom and the Czech Republic previously introduced similar transit visa requirements for Russian citizens. The authorities of both countries did not provide explanations for the decision.
Spain introduced the restriction as part of the European Union’s broader policy to reduce illegal migration. In the future, visa requirements for Russian citizens in the EU may become even stricter.
