The UN leadership stresses that the Russian war must end with respect for Ukraine's internationally recognized borders.
This was stated by UN Secretary-General's spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric on Monday, in response to journalists' requests for comments on the proposals recently made by Republican vice-presidential candidate JD Vance.
Dujarric emphasized that his comments are not a reaction to political statements but rather the position of the UN leadership.
"I am simply reiterating our position, which is that we want this war to end in accordance with international law, the UN Charter, and the territorial integrity of Ukraine," he stressed.
Vance stated in an interview that former President Donald Trump's plan for ending the Russian war in Ukraine might include creating a "demilitarized zone" in the Ukrainian territory currently occupied by Russia. This would mean that the demarcation line would be fixed based on the status at the time of the agreements between the parties. Ukraine would retain its independence in exchange for a guarantee of neutrality—meaning it would not join NATO or other "allied institutions." At the same time, Ukraine would need to be strengthened "so that the Russians do not invade again."
