Ukrzaliznytsia plans to purchase 20 Hyundai Rotem models for high-speed Intercity trains, according to Olexander Pertsovsky, head of passenger services, as reported by Forbes.
The trains can carry five to six million passengers annually. The cost of one train is approximately $16 million, with the total cost around $400 million, including maintenance. Negotiations are currently underway regarding the purchase.
In the first half of 2024, Ukrzaliznytsia transported 13.3 million passengers, a 23% increase compared to 2023. Pertsovsky forecasts that passenger numbers will exceed 27 million by the end of the year, compared to about 25 million in 2021.
The number of Ukrzaliznytsia’s wagons decreases by 5-7% annually due to their average age of 31 years. After signing the agreement, the first trains are expected to be delivered within 18-24 months, with the entire fleet arriving in Ukraine over the next three to four years.
