Poland to double Sławków terminal’s capacity to profit from Ukraine’s reconstruction

The Polish government is investing heavily in expanding the Sławków rail terminal in Silesia to tap into post-war reconstruction opportunities in Ukraine. Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced the move on Monday, highlighting plans to double the terminal’s transshipment capacity thanks to its connection to a broad-gauge rail line from the east.

Tusk emphasized that this investment will turn Sławków into the largest logistics terminal of its kind in Europe.

“This is not about breaking records — this hub will be a major opportunity for Poland. When we talk about Ukraine’s reconstruction, we’re not only talking about helping our neighbors, but also about Poland’s interests,” he said.

Referring to missed opportunities in post-war Iraq, Tusk stressed that Poland should not be left out this time.

“There’s nothing wrong with saying: yes, we want to earn big money for Poland from rebuilding Ukraine. We want to help, but also to profit from it — and that’s what this hub is for,” he added.

Wojciech Balczun, current head of Poland’s Industrial Development Agency and former CEO of Ukrainian Railways, said the terminal expansion will cost around 1 billion złoty (approx. $270 million).
