President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently held important meetings with two key German leaders: Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and President of the German Bundestag Julia Klöckner.
During his meeting with Federal President Steinmeier, Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to Germany for its European leadership in providing crucial military aid to Ukraine, particularly highlighting the country’s contribution to saving lives and delivering air defense systems. Steinmeier assured that Germany will continue to stand by Ukraine and its people in their ongoing fight against Russian aggression.
Both leaders emphasized the expansion of Ukrainian-German municipal partnerships, which play a vital role in implementing recovery projects and providing direct support to Ukrainian communities in need. Zelenskyy also highlighted the importance of Steinmeier’s patronage of the Chernihiv region, noting that the German state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is actively assisting in equipping shelters across four communities there.
In a separate meeting with Julia Klöckner, President Zelenskyy discussed proposals aimed at achieving a just and lasting peace in the war against Russia, stressing that Russia still shows no genuine intention to pursue peace. Defense support was a major focus, with Zelenskyy thanking Germany for allocating €7 billion in military aid this year and discussing the potential to increase that figure. He also welcomed the German Bundestag’s approval of constitutional amendments allowing increased defense spending, and the possibility of direct investments in Ukraine’s defense industry. Both leaders addressed Germany’s continued support for Ukraine’s path toward European Union membership. Zelenskyy invited Klöckner to visit Ukraine and expressed his appreciation for her vocal support of the country.
These high-level discussions underscore the strong partnership between Ukraine and Germany as Kyiv seeks sustained military assistance, recovery efforts, and integration with Europe amid ongoing conflict.
