The state continues to actively seek opportunities to provide high-quality drinking water to Ukrainians who have lost access to this vital resource.
The war has dealt devastating blows to critical water management infrastructure: pumping stations have been destroyed, pipelines damaged, and hydraulic structures demolished. As a result, many settlements have been left without stable access to drinking water. The problem is particularly severe in nine frontline regions, where the situation is approaching a humanitarian catastrophe.
Experts from the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources have thoroughly examined modern water purification technologies and considered the effective use of mobile water treatment systems from the Korean company Helloview. These units can purify water from various sources, making them a universal tool for addressing the water crisis. Information about these technologies has been shared with frontline regional military administrations and the State Agency for Water Resources of Ukraine. Requests have been received from the regions for 334 units of equipment, with the greatest need for purification systems in areas recently liberated from occupation.
Recently, the Ministry of Environmental Protection held a working meeting with representatives of Helloview to discuss the potential supply of water purification systems. The participants reviewed the technical specifications of the equipment and the financial aspects of cooperation. Due to limited financial resources, Ukraine is unable to cover the costs of purchasing and transporting these systems on its own. Therefore, the ministry has reached out to its Korean partners for support in funding this initiative under the Korea Aid programme.
"Providing people with clean water is a necessity. The war has caused massive destruction of water infrastructure, and we need swift and effective solutions. Cooperation with the Republic of Korea is a real opportunity to stabilize water supply in affected regions and protect the health of tens of thousands of people," said Serhii Vlasenko, Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine for Digital Development, Digital Transformation, and Digitalization.
The provision of mobile water purification systems will help quickly supply affected regions with clean drinking water, which is critically important for preserving people's health and lives.
Korea Aid is a Korean humanitarian initiative aimed at supporting Ukraine. In 2024, the Republic of Korea announced financial assistance to Ukraine totaling 520 billion won ($394 million), with the majority allocated to humanitarian projects, including improving Ukrainians' access to drinking water.
