Ukraine has asked Mexico to arrest Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin if he attends the inauguration of President Claudia Sheinbaum on October 1.
According to the Ukrainian Embassy in Mexico has expressed hope that the Mexican government is aware that
"Vladimir Putin is a war criminal" with an arrest warrant for alleged kidnapping and forced relocation of Ukrainian children to Russia, issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC), which Mexico recognizes. "We believe that the Mexican government will, in any case, execute the international arrest warrant by handing it over to the UN judicial body in The Hague," the letter states.
On August 7, Mexico invited Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin to the inauguration of newly elected President Claudia Sheinbaum. It is noted that since the arrest warrant for Putin was issued in March 2023, the Kremlin leader has avoided traveling to countries that are signatories to the Rome Statute, as authorities in those states are required to arrest him upon arrival.
However, Putin is occasionally invited to events outside Russia but consistently declines, likely due to fears of arrest. Putin regularly travels to Belarus and visited North Korea and Vietnam in June.
