Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a meeting with IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva.

The President thanked her for the attention to Ukraine and programs that help strengthen the Ukrainian economy and resilience, especially now, as Russian attacks and harsh winter weather create serious challenges.

Zelensky briefed Georgieva on Russian strikes targeting Ukraine’s energy sector, critical infrastructure, and residential buildings. Just today, Russians hit Kharkiv, leaving over 400,000 people without electricity and heat.

“You can see that attacks are happening not only at night but also in the morning and daytime. They exploit this extremely cold period, particularly over the last two weeks, to hit us as much as possible. In any case, we are grateful for the opportunity to maintain macro-financial stability through our relationship with the IMF. We count on continuing this partnership and on a new program,” the President said.

Georgieva noted that before the meeting, she personally visited one of the energy facilities damaged by Russian attacks and expressed solidarity with Ukraine.

“We admire the strength of the Ukrainian people. It is an honor for us to be the institution that can extend a helping hand,” she said.

The IMF Managing Director also acknowledged Ukraine’s efforts in fulfilling its commitments and assured continued support for the preparation and implementation of a new funding program, which the IMF and the Ukrainian government have been developing since last fall. Zelensky and Georgieva discussed the preparation of this program.

The new program will provide expanded financing for 2026–2029 to support macro-financial stability, fund critical defense and social needs, and aid in Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction.
