Biomethane can become a tool for restructuring Europe’s gas market – this was the opinion expressed by Ukraine’s Deputy Minister of Energy Mykola Kolisnyk at the international conference “Biomethane in Ukraine: Opportunities and Development.”

“Europe and Ukraine are going through a turning point in changing energy security strategies. Some European countries still import Russian gas. Biogases, as part of the ‘green transformation,’ are a component of the continent’s energy security. This is a path to replacing Russian gas with biomolecules, ‘green’ molecules. And Ukraine, as a country with huge potential in biomethane, can help Europe achieve its goals within the ‘Fit for 55’ strategy and the ‘RePowerEU’ program,” noted Mykola Kolisnyk.

In February 2025, Ukraine exported biomethane to the EU by pipeline for the first time. The government developed and adopted legislative and regulatory frameworks for the production, certification, and export of biomethane, as well as coordinated technical procedures with the Gas Transmission System Operator, Ukrtransgaz, and gas distribution network operators.

Mykola Kolisnyk emphasized the importance of cooperation with the EU in data and technology exchange and speeding up the connection to the unified European database. He stressed the need for market players to have access to EU financial instruments and attract international investments in the development of biomethane in Ukraine.

The Deputy Minister thanked Ukrainian biomethane producers for their active and effective work, as well as the European Commission, the EU Delegation to Ukraine, the Energy Community Secretariat, and the UK Government for their expertise and political support.
