Hungary and Slovakia will oppose the termination of purchases of gas, oil, and nuclear fuel from Russia. Both countries plan to vote against the European Commission's proposal in Luxembourg on June 16.
This was reported by Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó on Facebook.
According to Szijjártó, he discussed the matter with Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár. They coordinated the positions of Hungary and Slovakia regarding the European Commission’s initiative. Both sides concluded that such plans constitute a "blatant violation of our sovereignty."
"We discussed our positions over the phone with my Slovak colleague, Juraj Blanár, and agreed that we cannot accept such a blatant violation of our sovereignty. Formulating a national energy policy is a matter of sovereignty, and no one from the outside has the right to interfere. Neither for Brussels nor for Kyiv are we willing to trade our existing energy sources for more expensive and less secure ones! " Szijjártó stated.
He promised that the Hungarian delegation in Luxembourg would "protect Hungarian families" from rising utility costs.
He also described the possible halt of Russian oil and gas supplies as "blackmail by Volodymyr Zelensky."
