Europe must maintain unity, increase defense spending, ensure energy independence, and be capable of guaranteeing security. President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky stated this during his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
The Head of State noted that despite Russia's overall economic potential being significantly smaller than Europe's, the Russian Federation produces several times more ammunition and military equipment than all of Europe combined. Furthermore, Russia is deepening its cooperation with Iran and North Korea. This is why maintaining unity in Europe is crucial.
“We need a common European policy in security and defense, and all European countries must be ready to spend as much on security as is truly necessary, not as much as they have become accustomed to over years of negligence. If 5% of GDP is needed for defense, then it must be 5%,” Volodymyr Zelensky said.
The President emphasized that Ukraine has created cooperation models for defense that can strengthen all of Europe. This includes joint production of artillery and drones, including unique ones with no analogs in the world. Additionally, the Head of State called for joint development of air defense systems capable of countering all types of cruise and ballistic missiles.
“Europe needs its own 'Iron Dome' capable of countering any threats. We cannot rely on the goodwill of a few capitals when it comes to Europe’s security,” Volodymyr Zelensky noted.
He also emphasized that no European country should depend on a single energy supplier, especially Russia, and the policies of U.S. President Donald Trump may help address this issue.
Separately, the Head of State pointed out that Europe must be capable of guaranteeing peace and security for itself and others.
“Europe deserves to be strong. And for that, Europe needs the EU and NATO. Can this happen without Ukraine and without a just end to Russia’s war against Ukraine? I am convinced it cannot. Only genuine security guarantees for us will be genuine security guarantees for everyone in Europe. And we must ensure that America also considers us indispensable,” Volodymyr Zelensky concluded.
